Irish Games at Euro Championships – June 2012
Ireland will take on Croatia, Spain and Italy in the Euro 2012 Championships in the month of June (see dates and times at the bottom of the page).
OK so this is a bit off topic here, but it’s meant to be. Let’s, just for a little while, get back that buzz the Irish had when we were buying up large chunks of the world from 2000 to 2007. Admittedly we paid way too much for most of it, but the feeling of being Irish was simply wonderful at that time. It appears to have evaded us since and it would be nice, just for a while, to re-discover that feeling. So let’s forget our worries for a while, it’s time to lift the doom and gloom that’s been hanging over the country for the past four years. Let’s take some time out and, even if we’ve no interest in football, get out there and celebrate the Irish effort at the 2012 Euro Championships.
The Irish team now has a world class manager in Giovanni Trappatoni and a world class home in the Aviva Stadium at the old Landsdown Road. It is, indeed, something to celebrate.
We may not have the most creative team in the tournament, but then neither did the Greeks in 2004, nor did Denmark in 1992 – yet they are still both previous winners of the tournament. It, far more than the World Cup, is inclined to throw up unusual winners from time to time, so why not Ireland.
From here until our first game versus Croatia on June 10th we can dare to dream. Admittedly reality could come crashing home very quickly at that stage, but then again it just might not.
The Irish games in the qualifying group are:
Saturday June 10 – Croatia – Poznań – 7.45pm
Thursday June 14 – Spain – Gdańsk – 7.45pm
Monday June 18 – Italy – Poznań- 7.45pm
Let’s get out there, support the boys in green and spend a few bob in your local pub. This tournament could, more than anything else, get our economy moving again. For a little while at least.
